There was a rival with the weak starter in gen 5 and 6 too. Up until SwSh there were characters with both. Technically SwSh also if you count Leon claiming the 3rd starter.

SWSH's situation is exactly like SM, where Kukui has the 3rd Starter
SM though had the extra addition of giving Hau a counter-eeveelution and Gladion's Sylvally using the counter disc move

Making the pokedex a bunch of a book is a nice aesthetics and each Pokemon gets a page with a nice screenshot that isn't just the generic model viewer.
This the most effort they put into a Pokedex presentation, hardly the "Bare minimum"

I see your point anon, you mean the bookshelf background itself. I just wasn't really looking at it, but since you point it out, yeah it looks off a bit. Especially since it's in a rounded edge bubble section.
I guess when the screen is busy it's more tolerable.
Wonder if we'll be able to customize the background, probably not.
