It's very different from other Pokemon games, more focused on playing in small burst through the day and focusing on daily things and exploration.
If you'll play Crystal and plan to use Pokemon evolving through elemental stones remember to get phone numbers of Alan, Gina, Tully and Dana.
Don't get into the level curve memery. From mid game onward levels are becoming progressively less relevant thanks to stat experience and badge boosts build up.
Don't get too paranoid about "strength" of Pokemon. GSC has vastly lower power level than modern games and with mentioned above boosting mechanics you can easily use through entire game whatever you want.
Ideally you want to play it on portable device because as I mentioned above - GSC is really something you should be playing in small portions through the day. One of the notable advantage of it is being able to visit various locations during different times of day to encounter different Pokemon.
A lot of interesting encounters are more hidden. Besides said time of day stuff you also have headbutt encounters. Lapras in Union Cave to catch on Fridays and even small shits like Krabby being catchable using Old Rod in Cherrygroove, right after 1st gym.
