It's not like there weren't a host of rock weak mons in UU or OU? What pushed Sneasel down that far? Even Weavile ended up in OU, there was no reason for it to infringe on Sneasel's usage rate or viability in the lower tiers.

it surely does if fully invested, but not only does it by a small margin but also might not OHKO 70% accuracy gets the best of you as well as not being guarantee if fully invested or using Ice Beam instead for better accuracy, plus the issue of being useless outside of dealing with pokémon that are x4 weak to Ice, as any pokémon (even NFEs) will easily sponge every special hit from Sneasel.

Not him, but I think the sentiment is generally making every Pokemon bulkier and making STABs that work off your better offense makes it more valuable. It also forces a constraint on certain Pokemon that can go wild with their STABs now (if you exclude all the power creep that is).
Besides those points, it really doesn’t change that much about the game desu. Only a few Pokemon went from bad to great with just the physical special split.

I think that you're failing to understand the bigger issue when using a STAB on a 35 SpA stat. You need to look at more than just mons that are 4x weak to it but also how every other Ice and even non-STAB mons will overwhelmingly outclass it.

What mons were gimped by the split? Seems to me things either got worse after the split or they turned into braindead zombies spamming STAB moves. I imagine that was Gamefreak's intent, yeah, to make children (who thrive on imagination and creativity) to have things dulled down for them.

take a look at half of the Water types in Gen3, the worst case is Kingler: base 130 atk and almost and most of the movepool is Special outside of Double Edge and Return. On Gen4 it performs pretty well even on higher tier, a shame that Milotic and Slowbro check it and are more prominent to appear in UU and OU teams.

If the point was to do damage regardless of how much you're doing, why not just use Icy Wind instead?
If you're not bulking out to get that important KO, you're going to go as hard as you can, which means investing basically everything into SpA stat to get OHKO Blizzard. 2 rounds of Ice Beam won't cut it for Sneasel's frail ass, so the same is said for 2 rounds of blizzard if you don't invest into SpA.

Yeah, Hidden Power has 16 options to choose from, but you only ever would use a few. You can also eliminate a bunch of Hidden Power types if you don’t know which HPs are meta (which is basically what would be the best one for the user) by knowing the type chart.
Like no one would ever use HP Dragon since it hits only Dragon, something Ice already does while hitting Grass, Ground, and Flying. You can eliminate Poison in Gen 4 for similar reasons, and even Gen 3 where you could just use Flying.

Worked for me, tho. Choice Specs Kingler helped me plenty of times against fast physical attackers as long as they didn't use a Super-Effective move or a strong special hit on me. But like I said, walls were mostly the issue, with either Milotic or Slowbro stopping me on the tracks or either Suicune or Blissey (altho the latter got OHKO'd by my Choice Band sets). Another tip is to run Body Slam over Return for a high chance to cripple with status when failing to KO.

Idk it was overall a better design choice. Its not unplayable for sure but if im looking at a romhack im definitely trying one with a physical/special split before one without it. It shouldve even been implemented in gen 3 since abilities like rough skin didnt affect moves by physical type but whether or not they actually touch a Pokemon or not. But that's a discussion entirely missed in these split threads.
There are plenty of moves that were tailored specifically so that a lot of mons didn't lose access to their utility, and in a lot of ways gained more because of it.
