All cap names were fucking stupid i remember as a kid giving my charmander the nickname "Charmander" instead of CHARMANDER and then i realized when it evolved i had a fuckin charmeleon and then charizard that was still named "Charmander" which pissed me off

Different guy, but I remember doing that one my 2nd Red run (first got screwed up by Missingno shenanigans) and hitting the same "oh... that's dumb" moment. Wasn't the starter, was some early route mon that I released or boxed forever.

I don't know, that was just a thing in a ton of GB and NES games, no idea if that was a weird limitation or a translation thing.
It's pretty clear they stuck with it for a couple gens out of tradition, but eventually gave up and updated things anyway, though.
