Ground is arguably the fifth "species" type alongside Ghost, Dragon, Fairy, and Bug. Ground types are often focused on living underground, burrowing, or being representative of the earth itself. Those that fall under "rock stuff" are either part Rock or a different kind of earth like sand for Palossand and Sandaconda, mud for Ursaluna, Mudsdale, or clay for Claydol and Runerigus.
The only one that kind of fails is Ursaluna since they're literally just slapping mud on it to communicate Ground typing, when the Ground/Water types didn't need that on their designs to communicate they were species that lived in muddy areas.
