>>51203986I disagree. I actually think the Pokemon series has much more roleplaying than a lot of other RPGs.
You have a huge amount of freedom. You not only choose what Pokemon you'll have on your team, but what moves those Pokemon will know, whether you'll evolve them or not, and what to name them.
There's also piles of stuff that's left up to your imagination, like what kind of personality your main character has and what their relationship with their Pokemon is like.
The card game goes one step further and also lets you pick characters to travel alongside you.
Two people could play the same Pokemon game and have meaningfully different experiences because they roleplayed in different ways. Heck, a hundred people could.
There's a lot to criticize about the Pokemon games, but the sense of freedom and crafting your own story is something I think the franchise has always nailed.
