Is Shedinja at all viable?

I love the concept and have always wanted to use one in a Hoenn playthrough, but never have yet. Used Ninjask though.

Is the AI too stupid to grasp the concept, or will Shed just get wrecked constantly?

The segment bridging the 3rd and 5th gyms is a fucking nightmare because damn near everything has Fire, Flying, Dark, or Rock coverage or Sandstorm up, outside of that you only really have issues during Magma/Aqua segments because of their Pokemon choice, rest of the game's pretty clean for Shedinja as long as you pay attention to what you're battling.

In-game? Even Pyukumuku is viable. Go nuts anon, just be smart enough to tell when an opponet can hit super-effectively with STAB or coverage and you're good to go. Ideally bring it in late in a fight to clean up after its threats are gone.

It's shit in competitive though:

this makes Shedinja only usable in the remakes where you can just do the EV minigame upon catching an Adamant or Jolly Nincada and have a usable shedinja by like the third gym
there's also the fact that in gen 3 you have to breed silver wind into nincada in order to have ANY good bug moves
the remakes also have the exp share mechanics compensating for whenever you just can't use your shedinja

Only viable in doubles really. You can do like soak with a mon that has lightning rod or something like that, making it particularly hard to hit. Not much else besides that.

Increased to 17 would be ideal.
Since the weakest chip damage does 1/16 damage, always rounded down.

Can be a champ at many if not most of the gyms. Slightly worse in ORAS because things like crunch are more common.

That's while HDB are great, I still prefer Safety Goggles Shedinja... Just gotta make sure there's no sneaky pebbles.

4 HP would not work the same way because every Pokemon takes a minimum of 1 HP of damage from every source.
Sandstorm, hail, burn, and poison would deal 1/17 damage to a 17 HP Shedinja, and they would deal 1/4 damage to a 4 HP Shedinja.

Sorry, first turn of toxic, not regular poison.
Regular poison does 1/8 damage every turn, so it would do 2/17 to 17 HP Shedinja and 1/4 to 4 HP Shedinja.

It's pretty shit in a regular playthrough. Shedinja's best role is as a defensive Pokemon due to its immunities or a late match win condition after you faint any Pokemon that can harm it. While you could use it in a regular playthrough, you'll probably find it is a deadweight more often than not since so many Pokemon will have at least one move that can hit it.

For example, in a Hoenn playthrough, the only gym leader/elite 4 that Shedinja can comfortably sweep is Brawly in Emerald (in RS/ORAS, Makuhita knows Knock Off) and Wallace in RS/ORAS (in Emerald, you need to watch out for Toxic)

From the post I responded to, it sounded like the person thought 1/16 literally meant you needed to have 16 or more HP not to just instantly die in one turn. But I get what you are saying. At the end of the day, 1/16 of 4 or 17 ends up being rounded to 1 by the game engine regardless so you would have more staying power with an HP of 17. But then it just becomes a game of how many turns you want to last, not exactly about how fractions work. So to me giving it 4 HP or 17 HP doesn't make a damn difference other than letting it last longer, in which case it's not really the same Pokemon anymore. If they want to fix Shedinja, just do it the other person suggested in the thread and change how Wonder Guard works.

I feel like they should tweak Wonder Guard to at least make it have built-in Heavy Duty Boots. That way weather can still check it, but hazards won't be an issue. It won't make the Pokemon overpowered either, just makes it more viable . Of course, Game Freak would never do this. They nerf fun things like Disguise and Gale Wings because people weren't playing with those Pokemon the way that GF intended them to be used. It's insane to me how they could nerf Talonflame, Aegislash and Mimikyu into oblivion but then make Zacian, big head + horses, or many of the Max moves. All 3 of those Pokemon were not that centralizing to the meta, they had checks and balances OR better ways to nerf them (like removing Steel's Dark and Ghost resists, the Knock Off buff, etc). I really do think GF was just upset that people were not using these Pokemon how they expected them to be used and wanted to force more people to use the legendaries/mythicals/UBs.
