they succeeded at first, but then later gens shat the bed by giving steel types actually good moves like iron head and flash cannon, and then also making it one of the only two types strong against the best type in the game. now steel coverage is actually really useful to have, and being steel type is a virtue offensively, so it's getting the best of both worlds

Ground/Rock was good in gen 1 for the perfect dual STAB combo and resistances to normal and flying.
Mono-ground was pretty mediocre. Dugtrio had speed and the Nidos coverage, but every other ground type was pretty outclassed by Golem and Rhydon otherwise.

Steel is only good offensive on Steel types and a handful of Pokemon who use it as coverage. Poison type attacks are still going to be more common across the board, and the amount of fairies who are either weak to poison or another typing I think are more common than the ones where hitting them with steel is your better option. But you are correct in saying that over time steel has become a much better type and fairy was its biggest boon. Because of Fairy there is now a reason to run steel attacks and even more reason to run 1 or 2 steel types on your team

Maybe I'm alone in saying this but I think it's time they removed the Psychic resistance. It never made sense other than to nerf Psychic in Gen 2, and now I don't think that's necessary because, if anything, Psychic needs a small buff. I also feel that Steel should go back to resisting Dark again, only because most common Dark moves are physical. But I can understand keeping that resistance pretty much solely to allow Knock Off to be effective against bulky Steel types. Though I think the only reason they removed the resistance was because they were afraid Aegislash would be too powerful without more checks? They could always bring back the resistance and just make it so that Knock Off ignores resistances if the target has an item I guess.
