The important thing in storytelling is to never EVER let sexuality, race or whatever define your character. Thats how you realize whether you're reading lefty shit. If both MCs in ToE were just very close friends, or if the Riolu was female, there would be literally zero difference in the story.
I'll give you another example I found recently, in the snoy spiderman game. There's this cop who helps spiderman, makes it to the news, gets a medal and then dies to a terrorist attack. Literally nothing wrong with the character, just basic capeshit. But the dude is black.
Once again, you use the golden rule: make the character white, or asian, or mexican instead. Does it change ANYTHING about the story? Anything at all? No. Then its okay. But if this character would've went like "oh he is a cop, but he is a mistreated cop who cant get a partner because he is BLACK, and of course NOBODY really trusts him, and minorities and opressed" and so on and so forth, I would've immediately uninstalled the game.
Back to ToE, I dont remember a single moment where the MCs ever get shunned or them being gay affects them in any possible way in the story.
