It is by far the most environmentally diverse region in the series, really adding to that adventurous feeling that a lot of regions seem to lack. After pretty much every gym the next place you go to is in a completely different biome from the last. You start off in forests, then move on to a tropical island, then a port town and the fields beyond, then a volcano and the wastelands around it, a desert, then a tropical rainforest, then the open ocean, and then even the sea floor. You're constantly going to wildly new places and very rarely stick to one biome for too long. Compare this to a lot of the other regions in the series where the region is like 60% grass and forest, 30% rocky mountains/caves and 10% sea and that's about it. The sheer variety in Hoenn has never been matched.
Add to this what other anons have said about it being very interconnected and organic, and it's a no brainer
