How does the exp system works?
If I lead with a strong pokemon but have a bunch of low levels in my party, do the party get normal amount of exp or do they get nerfed amount because of my lead's level?
What's a good HM slave?

Very ground weak, and you'll want to add a sixth member soon as the game is going to undergo a difficulty spike. I recommend something like Baitmaster to cover two types you don't have yet.. Otherwise fine.

And to encourage using a variety of teams depending on who you go against. Most 'boss' trainers have competitive teams after the second gym, and EV and IV trained teams after...I think the sixth. Your toxiraptor might be fantastic against a trainer like Snoop, but against Freddy it would be nothing but a liability.

You don't need to actually EV train until after the E4, when you're given tools to easily do so. In the postgame, you're given access to a place that has encounters that don't fight and give you max EVs in one stat, a place to grind your levels, and buy EV reducing berries. It's also the island that has a proper breeding facility, and nearby you can get a breedmon that has perfect IVs, and you can get a destiny knot too.

You will, however, likely need to adjust your team for various encounters prior to the postgame. The battle house in triport will have four trainers with theme teams, each of whom will not give you money or take money, and will have levels that scale with your gym badges.

Whenever a mon is the same level as the next gym leader, it gets less Exp. for each level it goes over.

No. Your weaker mons still get a lot more.

The game doesn't really expect you to EV train before the postgame. EV training makes things a little too easy, imho.

You don't need to do EV training and team swapping, EV training will make you strong enough to brute force through basically everything.

This is Clover's most major flaw, you dont get good QoL for EVs until postgame, EV training before postgame is incredibly tedious and shitty. I would recommend just playing through until you meet a boss that stonewalls you and train up a Pokemon or two that could help you out as needed. Your team is strong enough for now that I don't foresee any major obstacles for the immediate future.

You also can use PKHex with Clover (just use it for EVs only and don't touch anything else if you do)

Sounds good, thanks for the replies. In case I want to EV train one or two of my favs, is there any list of which mons give which EV?

Other than that, that's all I have to ask. Having tons of fun. This is actually the best romhack I've ever played by far, most of the fakemons are pretty well designed and the movesets they learn are satisfying and full of options. I only wish the VS seeker was in because I'm struggling a lot with money, having to rely on pickup full teams nuggets.

You read the post I made as you replied to it. You can get Galvantula, Bronzong, Blissey, Jellicent, Arcanine, Ludicolo, the mystery egg is guaranteed good, mons like hariyama and swellow and zoroark are also still pretty good, early game gives you a lot.

there are plenty of decent pokemon like arcanine, donphan, your starter, and even a guaranteed fucking OU mon egg you're able to get before the third gym. if anything, locking the best pokemon until later in the game is much smarter design than dropping everything on the first route and filling every later route with inferior pokemon. to say nothing of the fact that half of the "shitmons" are even more useful than in the official games due to the field effect system.

have you ever played an RPG that isn't pokemon? bosses having an advantage over the player is not abnormal or bad in the slightest as long as the player has the means to work around them. the only shittily designed PULSEs are the ones designed to outspeed and oneshot you before you can land a hit in. but the majority of them are slow and easily built in order to let the player build and utilize a strategy around them.
just because your ideal pokemon game involves getting your entire team together before the first gym and steamrolling the rest of the game without any change in strategy does not magically mean everything that prevents you from doing that is bad game design.

not great admittedly, but I also reiterate you're going against the mighty likes of cottonee and ferroseed, and you still have a large bevy of poison and flying types. the second gym in clover pits you against a mon with the same rough stat spread as slowbro with near-perfect coverage who can use ice beam, on top of a mon that always lands crits and has an awkward typing for you at that point. while of course the best you can get is what? caracold? the early shitter grass types?

I was obviously referring to the masdawg, and even though people say "its just a masdawg" its stats are 360/237/226/185/226/319 (and you multiply the defensive stats by 1.5 due to eviolite). For comparison, vyglass's clovenix at level 80 is 316/262/199/215/199/269. Literally worse speed, bulk, and a lower main attacking stat.
Is the masdawg that hard? Not really, but neither is the arceus in reborn. Reborn has its share of bullshit fights but it's hardly that much more than clover

I don't know if I'd agree with that. 2nd gym has Ice Beam coverage? 3rd gym has auto electric terrain and perfect coverage? Gyms start getting max EVs/IVs and you don't have any way of training that shit easy until postgame?

Clover allows you to get around all the above obstacles, but it still is bullshit, in the sense its a strong tool the AI has that the player does not, though its very clear you're just using the word "bullshit" to mean "difficulty you dislike" and when Reborn filters you it also becomes "artificial" without really explaining why. Reborn also gives you tools to get around its "bullshit", moreso relative to Clover in a lot of cases even.

Regardless I don't even necessarily agree that "boss has an advantage over you" is bad game design because I've played other games and am familiar with this. I'd recommend you do the same

Very early into the postgame you can find a 5IV Blobbos, just slap a destiny knot on it and breed your old team then level them up quickly at Grindhaus.
If you hate that idea then the locations of the caps are:

Alternatively, you can use a code for infinite rare candies but replace the ID for candies with bottle caps. As long as you do it in the postgame because the game no longer cares about anti cheat at that point.

I don't have a special attacker water.
Rock Smash and Strength are inferior to Hammer Arm and especially to Sacred Sword.
Fly is worse than Stratos Cut or whatever is called.
They're "pretty good" as they're straight downgrades from attacks I have.

You don't always know when a tough trainer is coming. Some you know, like gym leaders, but it's still incredibly annoying to have to keep swapping one mon out and in.

But it's still additional grind needed to do, adding an issue main pokemon games didn't because they realized no trainer will ever have a full team, and made sure almost no trainers have 6 pokemon. Again, romhacks adding new issues.

And I don't know which ones are without prior knowledge of the game. So my first run is tainted because I need to either walk with a gimped team or keep backtracking to grab the the hm slave I'm missing.

Why can't romhack makers just stop jerking off to their own teambuilding skills and just make normal enemy NPC teams with normal viable strategies that don't entirely rely on you moving heaven and earth for this one battle that would never be viable on an pokemon team accounting for multiple trainers and exploration?

There are games like Unbound and Radical Red and Reborn that pretty much remove HM necessity. But it was never particularly a big deal in Clover. I would recommend actually playing it for yourself to see for yourself that most of the problems you'll run up against aren't related to HMs.
And honestly thinking on the romhacks I've played its almost never been an issue, I'm actually struggling to think of a time when I was genuinely annoyed at needing a certain HM mon to progress

Your team matches up terribly against Carlito to the point where having an HM slave and being apparently down a mon really wouldn't have made a difference. This really does seem to just be making a mountain out of a molehill.

Keksandra/Viol fights you in Mt. Moot, before Rock Tunnel, outside the Safari Zone, and at the end of victory road. In every case its either not in an area with HMs, right beside a pokecenter, or you can see him/her on the map.
Edgie fights you in Vitlya Forest (no hms), ruse cruise (no hms), before karma sub hq (no hms), and the surprise fight in the league (no hms).
There's also fucking l jackson and the league jews but they're just blatantly meant to be trolls and are beaten easily.
But yeah the game is incredibly lax on hm requirements. I guess mt. clover forces you to have a few hms? But that's the final dungeon, it gives you a healing station and it opens up shortcuts to lower floors on top of having no hordes of random trainers

Yes, but read back. The point is the size of those routes and you need Fly to skip them. Also while you don't need hms to traverse 13-15, there's several hm spots in it that you need to go back and backtrack to grab them if you don't have the slaves on you.

The point is I don't know that. Again, yes if you're playing for the billionth time and you already know everything, then yes that doesn't apply. I'm travelling areas expecting to need HMs to collect everything, so I'm less prepared, and thus ambushed.

Such as? I have checked around anything I can swap and there's really nothing. Where would I put Surf? All 4 moves on my Ctulhu are not TM. Aqua Tail, Crunch, Hammer Arm and Tether Dance. I don't have the TM for any of those. It's a similar situation with the rest.

That's my bad, but I still don't see it. Routes 13-15 aren't actually very long to traverse once you've gone through them once (that section really only gets dragged by the Border Hop - route 15 itself has nearly no mandatory trainers). You're also not flying back and forth across Mt. Moot.
As for items gated behind HMs, isn't that the point? To get a reward you have to inconvenience yourself slightly.

I don't know the particulars but none of these mons are running 4 crucial moves at this level from purely levelup sets. And even if they did, you do not need to play optimally in every instance in order to beat the game. This is the thing I think I just can't get through to you here.

If you really need it again, you can go back and reteach it. Also, as people above you are saying, Cut isn't needed for that section anyway.
This is kind of what difficulty is about, though, is finding a solution that works best for a rough problem. Not everything is going to be handed to you on a silver platter

I'll be fighting dozens of them.

This confuses me because no Pokemon game ever tends to let you get all the items on first go-through. There's a lot of items in early areas you backtrack to. This is such a particular complaint to get into this long of an argument over.

A pokemon, on a competitive scenario, will have set up moves and low PP moves because the fight exists in a vacuum. On an exploration normal game scenario, I need type coverage and PP usage, because I'm not gonna heal 100% after every fight. In competitive, type coverage is only one aspect of a moveset, and PP literally doesn't matter. You're not gonna set up stealth rocks and spikes with every single random ass trainer in a route.

The game checks to make sure you don't have an illegal amount of certain items, such as rare candies, master balls, dream pills, etc. or legendaries that can't be obtained before postgame. It also does somehow check if you obtain a lot of coins or money illegally. If the anti-cheat triggers then your save file is deleted upon defeating the E4 in a pretty funny cutscene. As said before once you beat the game once the anti-cheat detection stops caring.
You can use PKHex to adjust your EVs and IVs though, or use something like an infinite exp glitch, just don't add in a bunch of rare items or legendaries and you should be fine

Your file becomes softlocked and you need to reset.
There used to be ways to get the bad ending while playing legit, like getting postgame mons from wondertrade or getting any legendary, even the legit ones. I think they fixed that, though.
