Never owned a 3DS, Wiiu, or Switch. Never played any Pokemon games after Heartgold. What, if anything, am I missing?

You aren't really missing anything. Gen 5 was the tipping point where it was still kind of good but everything after was shit. If you really give a shit emulating both the 3DS and Switch is fairly easy and then you don't have to give either GameFreak or scalpers money. I'd say don't bother though.
