Marnie didn't give up, she technically succeeded. It just wasn't in the way she originally set out to do. Bede never settled for anything either. He just wanted papa Rose to notice him but wound up with a mama Opal instead. So he technically won out in the end too, by getting the family and parental guidance he always wanted/needed. Hop is the only real king of second bananas here, as his story quite literally mirrors Sonia's.
