These matches have been so boring. Maybe it’s bias- I realise the meta is always somewhat stale but this year especially it’s just same mons, same move sets, same items.

It used to save way too much time and effort to the point it did give an advantage (getting teams ready, adapting to the changing meta and even other teams DURING the tournament quickly, etc). Mostly mattered in gen 5 and 4.

Based on what we know we can pretty confident say it's impossible for Tera to anywhere near as bad as dynamax.

I'm optimistic that they learned how overturned dynamax was and it will be one of the most balanced and fun gimmicks, but who knows what bullshit they might pull.

If it's that inconvenient to adapt to the meta or simply swap out your team members on the fly then it's shit to begin with honestly. Plus for practice at home and team building the battles Sims were always an option, PO was around since gen 4 and showdown has been around forever too. Honestly I don't even know why they keep this tied to the main game at this point. If they're gonna make team-building more streamlined and easier with each gen anyway why not just have online battles just be a battle sim? Can't use your in game mons but can team build and battle freely.

I agree because I fucking hate that they have to shower you with exp candies and bottle caps out the ass in the main game, it cheapens the entire thing unless you play online in the actual console which I don't enjoy.

The fuck does this even mean? If they made a universal 500 BP move, it wouldn't be balanced just because every Pokemon can learn it.

Dynamax is overtuned because it gives WAY too many buffs to a Pokemon and creates a huge gap between a dynamaxed Pokemon and a regular Pokemon, which is unhealthy.

Exactly, the VGC shit leaks over into the main game and throws it all out of wack and vice versa. TPC is just so stubborn I guess and wants to pretend like Pokemon is a magical video game where you can hand raise your favorite farm grown scrimblo into a world champion. When it just doesn't work good that way. They'd honestly make a fuckload more money by just charging for the battle Sim aspect in game. 10 bucks a year and you get full battle Sim access. People would buy it. You could still do regular multiplayer but the free battle Sim would be extra. It'd be jew as shit but it would fix so many problems

Dynamax isn't a balanced mechanic because some pokemon have better stats and movepools to take far more advantage of it. If my dmax pokemon is beedrill and my opponents is groudon, no amount of me "outplaying" my opponent is going to change that I'm at a huge disadvantage. My dynamax is far far far weaker than his inherently. If a good pokemon gets access to a strong mechanic, it gets great. If a bad pokemon gets the same it either stays bad or becomes only good. It's not equal

If a part of the game is too powerful and easily applied, it can be unhealthy because the risk/reward is skewed on it. It trivializes other mechanics and strategies, which leads to boring, stale metagames.

I don't think what anons are arguing that both players don't have equal chance to work around and with Dynamax, its that Dynamax trivializes a lot of what the game was and creates thoughtless 50/50 set ups.

I've been to PCs and regionals where nobody has a stream going, and yet matches will still take forever. After a round is finished, which can greatly vary how fast every single match goes for as connection issues and miscommunication can cause delays, the TOs pop the new figures into a spreadsheet, get the new pairings, and post them so players can go find their spots. The ability to change type (1 type picked) on a whim sounds crazy good, and if you can just supercharge yourself a stab like Regieleki or ghost Calyrex S, or if you can remove a bad typing/ change to a viable defensive typing (say Aggron goes from Rock/Steel to just Steel) then I can see potential for this to get out of hand too. Not that it matters what they think, but I can forsee this getting banned in 2 weeks after launch on Smogon because of maybe 1 or 2 instances where a guy sweeps with 0 reprocusions. Maybe just because it's doubles it will automatically be easier to adress, but time will tell.

True but there were lots of mechanics we didn't know pre-release that made a huge impact, like HP being 2x instead of 1.5x, tons of moves being blocked, max moves being stronger than 130 BP, etc. Tera seems a lot more straight forward in its design, and while it will probably be unpredictable chaos for the first few weeks it will eventually stabilize and people will learn how to use it defensively.

TCGs are centered around drawing power, a heavy form of rng. It can be manipulated but it's the focal point of the competition. In the game I can use team preview, my knowladge of the mechanics and history of the meta to interpret what my opponent will do before he has even selected anything in the match. The two are nothing alike, and I find it insulting that you whittle it down in not just a simple way but one where the comparison makes no sense.

Deck building for the best way to manipulate the rng to make your strategy happen. While both the card game and video game involve processes of preparation/building as strategies need to be cognizant of the meta so you dont get defeated while using a vacuum strategy, the impact of control the players have even before the first turn of a vg match makes it a completley different beast, before we even get into discussing turn by turn options, mechanics, win conditions, and centeralizing strats around said wincons.

That isn’t the point of the analogy you fuckwit, and in Pokemon the RNG is built into turn by turn interactions instead of card draw. In Pokemon there are only a handful of viable Pokemon. In Yugioh/Magic/Pokemon only a handful of viable decks.

But that's rng waaaay toned down. I would not compare a 9/10 accuracy check or a variable rng damage of 5-15 HP to what card I'm drawing at the start of my turn. I know my opponent's Pokemon, with that and my knowladge of speed tiers I know who's more likley to move first and get their strategy off. I know they have the chance to switch out and need to accommodate for that. These are things that a tcg as we know it would not and could not handle.

Megas were way more centralizing than Dynamax. Both gimmicks inform teambuilding a lot but with megas you had like 4 viable options in 2014, another 2 in 2015, and the less said about 2016 the better. Meanwhile, Dynamax can be used by literally anything (even Incineroar gets in on the action sometimes) which not only opens up teambuilding options but also allows you to get some value out of the gimmick if your primary user is rendered incapacitated.

It sounded to me like you were saying the merit of strategy in VGC is no different than that of the TCG, but if all you're saying is "with a meta there will be those who are on the top of the list and used succesfully often" then I wholeheartedly agree, and while that's no innatley a bad thing there is nothing wrong with trying to balance your game so that pool of viable pokemon and strats is as large as possible. I say this with a caviat that there may be issues with most every option being equally viable, but I have little experience on that side of the debate and think it's not really relevant as it's the extreme opposite pole.

Yeah his water STAB is crazy, but Water Spout puts you in a weird position where you either have to sacrifice another moveslot for Origin Pulse or chance moments where you can't hit a big STAB outside of max geyser. He's got a degree of unreliability there.
