I think it'll get really bad when Gamefreak's members start dying off.
It's weird, I think GF does a lot of frustrating things with pokemon but at the same I don't really trust anyone else with pokemon. Only GF "gets it".

to start, i don't see it just ending. it's going to die slowly and miserably. this cancer will become apparent after years of mismanagement and poor reception, on levels that have actual, tangible consequences. eventually they'll bow out of traditional game development, which will have a domino effect on merchandising, media, etc. in its last breathes it will be whored out in collaborations and fads, and it will eventually evaporate

Only if Nintendo dies. As long as they keep releasing systems, Pokémon will continue being a thing, as even the shittiest release doubles system sales in launch week.

For GameFreak that would be the best situation.
Imagine having full control over the IP and being able to publish mainline games on Sony, Xbox, PC and smart devices. They'd be printing more money than the world could give them.

Game Freak doesn't hold the majority of the Pokémon IP rights. If Nintendo dies, they'd sell the rights to someone, but GF would still have the 33% of the IP, assuming they don't die with Nintendo
