Hell, they said they deliberately chose people who had been exposed to the series as kids and I'm sure the endless surveys and polls they run told them more about people's reception to the things, but sure "everyone I saw online crying about them means the world hated them" and not "Game Freak couldn't think of how to take their past designs further until recently, given how stringent they are with what creatures they put in the game". Leafeon took fucking 2 gens and 7 years to get in-game because they don't add something if it doesn't fit the region or the series.
