Considering the current states of games like BotW2 and Metroid Prime 4, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo's got a new console in the works.
But in all likelihood they aren't abandoning the Switch as a handheld just yet, so Pokemon will remain accordingly.

My prediction:
2023: SV DLC (it's already confirmed by leakers)
2024: random experiment game in the vein of LGPE or Legends
2025: gen 10 on the switch 2 which has been out since late 2023

Law of cycles stated three games in three years, we just got 4 in 3 before the new Gen reveal. Cycle's been broken, whether for good or just to spin out Gen 9 4 years to launch Gen 10 in '26 is up in the air.

The only way I can see the cycle getting broken is if it involves complications regarding the next Nintendo platform, fuck knows they don't want a repeat of Gen 5 laying the foundations for another Yo-Kai Watch to spring up and steal away the Nippon kiddin's attentions for awhile.

That only happened as Game Freak went into a gap year and TPC dropped the ball. Given they've roped in whos to run cover for a potential 4th year game (again, they DID just release 4 games in 3 years and by end of '22 it'll be 5 in 4), I'd be betting in them dragging out Gen 9, because marketing a new game and Gen in a significant anniversary year is an absolute no-brainer. Look at how little fucks they gave about the 25th anniversary, compared to the 20th.

Nintendo should wait until 2025 to release their next hardware. Bringing it closer to the release of gen 10 is smart, and the Switch is successful enough to last that long and then some.

I could live in a world where the Switch becomes their "handheld" line (with the dock working as it does now) and a new more powerful home console becomes the flagship. It goes back against their devs merging (handheld and home console deptartments) but that's just me wishing they had a stronger console AND a handheld too
