It was a fun and good movie but it wasn't exactly any masterpiece material.

But it does earn some points for being a movie that tried to be original, by not using fucking Ash and his friends for the hundredth time. And that it tried to depict Pokemon in a realistic world.

If they make a main series inspired movie like what was rumored I hope they take more liberties from the "moves are actually transmuted energy, not the literal element" theory so the battles look less abusive.

It was not the worst movie but it was weird how the sonic movie put it to shame.

As for the grotesque designs I believe that is where they will take the games and I fucking hate it.

But it didn't. The Pokemon had a lot of varied designs just like they do in the games. You had cute cuddly Snorlax and Psyduck next to cool looking Charizard and Greninja. The Pokemon looked much better than they had any right to be. The issue however is that they didn't use RGBY as a basis because they were afraid of how people would relate to the Pokemon.

It was kino.

I think it did a good job of being both acessible to casual fans while still having a lot of details specifically for autistic super fans (I was originally just using this pic to show off the cool-ass office statues and the vague foreshadowing that the CEO is evil because he's where you'd expect Giratina would be, but while looking at it I also just noticed there's a King's Rock on the left and a Prism Scale on the right, which just shows how much detail they put into random setpieces 90% of people would never notice).

I also like how the pokemon look, I think they struck the right balance between looking like whimsical colourful creatures and actual monsters.

The plot aside, it certainly didn’t feel like the movie was being half-assed by people who didn’t understand Pokémon. There’s a lot of Roger Rabbit influence from how often they reference the source material without it coming off as excessive or annoying.

Exactly, you said it better than I could have. It felt like a movie naturally set in a world with pokemon, not one that tried too hard to be about pokemon even though they were central to the plot.

I didn't care for it but I'm mystified as to why they didn't think it had enough legs for a sequel. They put it up against fucking Endgame and then got pissmad when it was "only" second to it that summer.

I didn't actually. I thought I was going to enjoy it more, but no. Needed more focus on the Pokemon themselves and battling/catching. I only got excited when references to battle mechanics were made or when a Pokeball appeared on screen.
