I feel this might be Ash's last hurrah, actually. His story is getting too long and complicated for the average newcomer (a child) to grasp and feel connected to, and I think the pokemon company is feeling that. Maybe they'll let him ride through Paldea (maybe as a teacher, aide this time). They'll slowly ween the audience off Ash, as they've been doing I'm Journeys.

I don't think we'll get a new "main protagonist" until a new Japanese region.

I don't think they'll do the school route again, as they did that with Alola, and anime wise, it's far too recent. It also begs the question who will teach him? He's the Alola champion, and as of the recent past, at minimum one of the top four trainers in the world.

I hope it's a situation where we see a young child watching television, seeing Ash's battle, and being inspired.

Ash is only really popular for his legacy, so they keep on bringing it up but no kid actually gives a shit about that part.

They’re never replacing Ash until he becomes a Pokémon Master. They’ve intentionally kept that goal vague as shit so it can keep going.

Also just because he’s beaten champions doesn’t mean he’s unbeatable. He’s going to win some matches then lose some matches nothing more, nothing less. Iris said it herself that just because she’s a champion doesn’t mean that she’s anywhere near her goal.

It's ambigiously described, but in the sinnoh league japanese sub Ash states that winning a pokemon league was just the first step to reaching that goal.
As someone who hasn't kept up with the ashnime for YEARS, this anime season seems to be about the closest it has ever gotten to concluding Ash's goal. Ash battling and defeating E4 and Champions used to be downright unthinkable.

It's entered it's final arc, according to the creator. But he's also not sure how long it'll take him to finish the thing. He wants to wrap it up in three years but admits he's been wrong on timeframes in the past so it may extend.

Final saga*
The arc thing was mistranslation spread initially by anime news websites and animetubers. And while Oda said three years, it's well known that he's pretty bad with time management so lol. For reference Four Emperors saga started in 2015 and ended literally last week so if final Saga as wrap up of everything is supposed to be longer thank that then we may end with 10 more years of one piece. And there's really a lot of things that were foreshadowed, hinted or just must happen before end of the series + Oda in his greatness is still introducing new things, like Buggy, Mihawk and Crocodile working together as Cross Guild.
