Speak for yourself. The only money I've spent on Pokemon in the last decade has been on the spinoffs. I have tons of other franchises I like better anyway so I don't need to eat any old slop that TPCi serves up.

When I was a kid I was always bored and understimulated
until Pokemon came out. It was the first time I was deeply obsessed with something. I think it's ingrained in my dopamine receptors or something because Pokemania was such a high that I'd never felt before.

I dunno, it's a habit but I find the shitposting about it here funny. I've found I'm less enthusiastic about this series as time goes on. I sold my copy of SWSH after a week, didn't buy PLA until months after its release after people said it was the best game in years, and am disappointed by SV and will probably pass on it. I just play Masters and Unite now since they're ok timewasters.

I checked out after Gen 3, I just circle back around to the franchise every now and then to watch a few vids, fire up one of the old games on emu, brainstorm for that romhack I'm never gonna actually make due to bring a codelet, scrool this board for the premium level autism, etc

Nostalgia, unique monsters that no other franchise can legally offer or replicate (mostly due to said nostalgia), a monopoly on the monster collecting genre meaning Pokemon's one of your only options aside from Digimon, Dragon Quest, Megami Tensei or the myriad of shtity indie games, and furthermore nostalgia.

Lack of competition, they're aren't any other franchises that fill the niche in the same sense Pokémon does. Hopefully when Temtem 1.0 comes out next month it starts gathering a following.

I still play the games, because most of my friends do and it's always a good time, but I don't really consider myself a fan of the franchise anymore like I was as a kid.
I feel like I moved on for the most part, and yet I keep coming back every so often because I don't want to get completely out of touch with the franchise.
