they’re almost always just made as filler because the designers are forced to put something between the cute first stage and cool looking final stage. I like middle stages like raboot or shelgon where they have a distinct look from the rest of the line but still make sense thematically.

I can't help but wonder if it's even worth trying.
The middle stage is just meant to connect the first and final stages without making the transformation too drastic.
A good middle stage is generally just one that makes sense in in between the first and last.

It’s something that helps make sense of the first and last stage’s connection. Like turning into a cocoon, a flower in the middle of blooming or simply it starting to grow new features.

It hits that sweet spot that it’s neither a bigger version of the first form and a smaller version of final form but still shows signs of progression
