Is the selected PLA Protagonist Dawn or Lucas? If they are, are they 'Champion of Sinnoh who got all the badges and defeated Cynthia' Dawn or Lucas or 'Rowan's Assistant' Dawn or Lucas?

If they aren't, why do they look so much like them? A new design wouldn't hurt.

Pre-release material uses the same name for both no matter which one is the MC and which one is the rival. Rei isn't Lucas and Araki isn't Dawn.

yes they are. when you send mons to bdsp it talks about how you were reunited with them, rather than them having travelled as is the case with other special event mons. the protag of PLA and BDSP are the same.

The only thing that's certain is that the Protagonist would have to know the Manaphy lore to be able to solve it in PLA, which is only in BDSP, not the originals.
Volo's wording when he talks about what he's going to do, makes it sound like this isn't the first time you had to deal with this.
So I would say at the very least, post-Box Legendary, BDSP Dawn and/or Lucas

I think they are descendant of NPC Rei/Akari that choose to stay in the past and married Diamond/Pearl clan leader which started a new separate bloodline from which Lucus/Dawn comes from.

That would explain why we don't see any descendants of Diamond/Pearl clan because the protagonist on BDSP is their descendant. It also explain how Lucus & Dawn are connected and switch places with each other based on the player gender.

Good to know that if I wear a Hawaiian shirt once then I'm a native Hawaiian despite never even once being within 200 or so miles away from the ocean before in my whole life. T-shirts mean fuckall, they're clearly meant to be the player characters of BDSP with their experience in catching and training Pokemon and the fact they know so much about how it works. They wouldn't be purposefully identical for no reason, especially when Dawn in particular is so popular. At the very least they're alternate versions of Dawn/Lucas that didn't become Sinnoh's Champion but still knew about things like Contests, the Pokemon League, etc. Amnesiac, possibly.

Yet SV has pokemon icons that match the ones from BDSP. Funny, huh? It's almost like BDSP is still a GF game and they can control the details, reuse assests, style, etc.

"Orlando" only exists in the non-canon demo, based on the "O" of Omega, that's why the japanese demo calls it "Omega" right away, like how Calem is called "Xavier" ("Ex" in Japan) in pre-release material.

They're an older Champion Lucas/Dawn struck with deliberate bits of memory loss so that any issues about suddenly being ripped from spacetime from home by God itself are mitigated, because as far as they would know at that point they've been chosen by a higher power for a special purpose and nothing more.

The point is that placeholder names stopped being used after gen 6. Back in gen 7 the canon name of the protagonists was used in pre-release material, with the "game-based names" being used only as alternative (see pic related, Elio was used all the time, but in this case, "Sun" was also used because they needed a second name for the boy). This applies to gen 8 as well, Victor and Gloria were in pre and post-release material, the names seen in trailers and such is just their official, canon name.

The main character of SM/USUM is Elio or Selene.
The main character of SwSh is Victor or Gloria.
The main character of LA is Rei or Akari.
The main character of SV is Florian or Juliana.

The protag of DPPt/BDSP is the same person as the human who got sent back to Hisui, only a few years older (15 yo instead of 1/11 yo). Which means yes, Protag Lucas/Dawn were sent back in time and the opposite gendered avatar in Hisui fulfils the same role as assistant Dawn/Lucas in DPPt/BDSP.
The only question is why did you not pick this up sooner, fucking chidren are able to understand this better than /vp/ holy fuck.

Except it doesn't, it mentions your rival/friend by name, but never says anything about the playable avatar not being Rei/Araki as well. And pre-release shows the name is Rei or Araki, no "Legen" or "Gends", no "Arc" and "Eus" or anything like that, they are just Rei and Araki.

I assume it's because of the wording. Nintendo's new policy for customizable MCs is that you no longer choose between boy and girl, just "appearance". Saying you're picking between playing as Rei or Akari would go against that.

Why wouldn't it? It's almost undisputable that Rei/Akari NPCs are the ancestors of the Lucas and Dawn, and it's not an uncommon trope to make an ancestor character the spitting image of their modern descendants.

Because it doesn't make sense to have a design represent two different characters and it wouldn't make the player's character interchangeable.
If the player was meant to be Lucas/Dawn, Game Freak would have just made the NPC an entirely different character like they sometimes do instead of recycling the unchosen design as Not-Lucas/Dawn.

According to Occam's Razor theory, PLA MC is Lucas/Dawn from the future. But looking at how Ingo lost his memory due to the same incident, it is safe to assume that Lucas/Dawn lost some of their memory too but not as bad as Ingo had.
