Japan has a weird relationship and history with religion and I don't know how much relevant it is right now. The term "new religious movement" did originate from Japan and it's from the post-WWII and the abolishing of State Shinto and introduction of freedom of religion. A lot of new religious groups started popping up in the 50's, which is common after war.
