>>51323909There’s actually a pretty simple reason why 2D and 3D are so different and why they inspire such visceral, pants-shitting tribalistic autism.
2D encourages theater of the mind, much like all classic JRPGs. The simplified graphics and gameplay lead you to fill in the blanks in your head. In 3D this works a lot less effectively because 3D games are in the complete opposite direction in their presentation, being very show don’t tell by comparison. It’s also why old 3D games have aged like milk where old 2D games are still incredibly accessible for the most part. 3D games are much more reliant on technology, and Gamefreak’s 3D is some of the worst there is.
There is no way to see a better game in your mind’s eye with the 3D games. I know this all must sound incredibly autistic but think about it for a while and you’ll realize I’m right. This is where your nostalgia comes from- your imagination filled in the blanks and made the 2D games that much better. The 3D games were supposed to deliver on some of that old childhood imagination of yours and thus far haven’t come close. You will never play the Pokemon game of your dreams.
