I always am like "boy, I'd love to replay BW/BW2 right now!!", and then when I actually do, most of the game is just mashing A through the dialog

The single worst instance of unskippable dialogue is the very beginning of XY where you have to sit through a forced meeting with the worst characters in the series while they try to give you a retarded nickname before you can choose your starter. And if you soft reset you have to sit through it again… and again… and again. Even Alola doesn’t come close to being as shit with its awful forced cutscenes.

XY is only like this at the beginning, SM is like that through the whole fucking game and you can't even mash A sometimes because fucking cutscenes

BW and BW2 are also like this through the whole game

It's pretty bad in gen 7 too. XY was also pretty bad towards the start of the game but Game Freak spent the entire budget on the first 3 gyms and the game was rushed after that so it is less of a slog to sit through.
