As someone who was around during Pokemania I don’t find the Unova starters badly designed. People are simply just tired of Gen 1 and are embracing the designs that came after it.

Gen 1's popularity is overestimated. Most of those Pokemon don't get talked about aside from the handful that Game Freak shills.

Squirtle and Bulbasaur are in the top 10 in terms of total merchandise. They get shilled a ton, Vp is just autistic and only points to Charmander line when it comes to shilling.

No they’re not. I first played a pokemon game in 2018 and the only pokemon I knew about beforehand were the ones that were playable in Smash and meowth.

Originally he was going to have his own according to this beta leak, and Blastoise was going to be his own thing. The backsprite isn’t much to go off of, but it looks like a larger, more grown up version of Wartortle instead of basically flipping everything on its head. Maybe they judt thought it would have been redundant, but I’ve never got the complaints of “it just got bigger”, I like it when pokemon preserve their themes and look like they grow
