You could? We had a single gen with regional forms (only Kanto mons, mind you) before the regional legendaries came. Meanwhile, not only megas were not given to NFEs the gen they were introduced, but no mega mon has been given an evolution in the two games since their reintroduction (three if we assume the leaks are true).

Unironically new toy syndrome because Smogon has a tendancy to quickban anything that is both strong and different to what people are used to, Megas were a new thing so people thought of them differently.
It was never gamebreaking in OU and was overshadowed by better megas like Khanga and Blaziken until those both got banned, the banning of two megas in quick succession meant they were already trigger happy when the decision to cut Mawile was made.

Even if that's some hard and fast "rule" that GF will never break, they'll probably just keep going down the increasingly convoluted path of regional variants and evolutions to regional variants.

So for example, regular mawile might never get an evo, but they'll give an evo to alolan mawile or whatever.

I honestly wouldn't mind Megas, but only if the mechanic stayed around through all subsequent generations, as was precedent with Pokemon alternative forms up until Gen 6.

Now that they aren't, yeah, I'm all for reconning / redesigning some Megas / Gigantamaxes into regular evolutions. Mega Mawile would probably be at the top of that list.

If you lost the 50/50 it was pretty damaging. It dropped in SM because it lost pursuit trapping and it;s King Shield only dropped Attack by 1 stage in SM vs 2 in earlier generations.

Regular forms stop getting jack shit when the regional form is introduced, so who cares. The only exception to this is Meowth and that's because G-Max was just another vehicle to shill Kanto.
But even if we get a regional Mawile form, chances are its evolution is still going to be awful since Mega Mawile actually had really lackluster stats propped up by Huge Power, unless they literally make M-Mawile 2, it'll suck ass, especially if it loses the S tier Steel/Fairy typing.

the problem here isn't that mawile didn't get a proper evolution. the problem is gamefreak keeps pushing awful gimmicks
