>>51345862>I'm not saying it's based on any specific whale. It's just based on whales. And I’m saying that all of its whale traits are orca traits
>penguinsMy dramatic countershading was in reference to whales only. The black on top white on bottom is pretty much just an oceanic dolphin trait among whales. I was just trying to penetrate what you meant by generic whale
>beaked whales and pygmy sperm whalesKyogre doesn’t look like a beaked whale at all and to pass over the orca for the very similar looking pygmy sperm whale is a reach, given that pygmy sperm whales aren’t patterned like kyogre (and orcas). If you argument here is just about length, then fine, granted. I still think that’s a silly point when Pokémon are rarely the same size as the animals they are based on.
>I completely agree. Kyogre just isn't orca-like enough for me to agree that it's a dolphin. Even if it has one or two orca traits.Okay let me propose a compromise. Kyogre isn’t a dolphin, it is a Pokémon. That means it also isn’t a whale either. It is based partially on an orca and therefore it is partially based on a dolphin. Let’s take lapras for example. If someone made a thread asking why she don’t have a plesiosaur pokemon yet, someone would be justified for posting a picture of lapras. Lapras isn’t solely based on a plesiosaur. It certainly isn’t literally a plesiosaur. I still think it should count as a plesiosaur mon for the sake of discussion. That also doesn’t mean that lapras’ existence means we should never get another plesiosaur mon. Plesiosaurs were wildly diverse and there is a lot of good shit in there to base Pokémon on. By that same logic, kyogre should count as a dolphin mon for the sake of conversation while not precluding the possibility of future dolphin mons existing and being distinct. Is that satisfying? At the end of the day we are arguing semantics.
