There's something wrong with all of the Kanto games. I love Kanto's map and available pokemon, but all the Kanto games have something that annoys me. RBY is the worst to grind pokemon in. FRLG is really bland looking and it has shitty mechanics like restricting cross gen evolutions, thank god they didn't do that shit again in HGSS. I think LGPE has the best trainers but I don't think I'll ever get used to the new catching.

Actually playing FireRed right now. It's pretty bland in some areas, but most of the time I'm enjoying myself. It's not awesome, but it's not really bad, either. Perfectly average and serviceable Pokémon game, in my opinion. If you decide you wanna play it, don't expect a beta version of HGSS and you'll probably like it.

I also found a shiny Spearow while looking for a Drowzee to add to my team. Good times.

I played the shit out of it when it was new but I feel nothing but ire towards it nowadays. Something about the look and sound of the games just rubs me the wrong way. I'm not sure if that's just because of oversaturation or if I genuinely dislike how they look and sound. I dislike them on an aesthetic level. And this isn't anti-Kanto bias either, it's just these games in particular I seem to dislike. I'm also not a fan of how the Sevii Islands are put on a pedestal as an example of good postgame content when in reality they're fucking boring. Just because it's new content doesn't make it good.

FRLG are some of my favorites because they got rid of all the stuff that get in the way of gameplay. Just pure unadulterated pokemon formula. I never get tired of playing gen 3.

superior graphics than r/s/e but it has the worst art department in the series, all the cities/routes look the same. it's like they used the same 4 tiles all over the map, also the pokémon sprites look ugly (but that's just my opinion).
but that's just the tip of the iceberg, the real problem is the pokémon distribution, gen3 is notorious for how hard it is to complete the dex but fr/lg took it to another level.

I remember being amazed at the time by such colorful graphics, the landscape views when you enter new areas and the fact that I could use some of my favorites that were not in RSE/Colosseum/XD.

However, as time has passed and partially due to the romhacking/fangaming scene, I don't like those sprites anymore.

I really like Kanto, but I prefer to play RBY or even LGPE (if LGPE had the cross-generational evolutions, it would have been one of my favorite games in the franchise).

However, I don't get the hate for FRLG or Kanto in general.

Not allowing the friendship evolutions to just happen naturally is one of the worst things they have ever done. I was so pissed when I was using my Chansey and every time it grew it a level it went to the evolve screen and wouldn't finally just become a Blissey until after I beat the game. If the evolution isn't going to be available then don't even go to the evolution screen you fuck.

FireRed was my first Pokemon games of my own (my brother had Red and Silver so I had played those already though), and I have replayed it a couple of times recently and had fun, but it's a little underwhelming. QOL makes it more fun to go back to than Red for me, but the feel of it is so sterile that I'm not a huge fan.

Good games, but very bland in a lot of ways, especially the tileset which feels way too samey. Only genuinely bad thing about them is no cross-gen evolutions until postgame. Overall some of the simplest Pokemon games, but they include everything that makes the series fun without a lot of the tedious bullshit from later entries.

Not Yellow though. Red and Blue are obsolete. It's sort of like how HG/SS are pretty much equal to Crystal (both God-tier IMO, and BD/SP barely even beat out D/P and are far inferior to Platinum.

RBY only has a nostalgic value.
FRLG is the best way to play Kanto + post game stuff. The veteran experience in terms of leveling up and pre typing split.
LGPE is the best way to reintroduce yourself to Pokémon if you dropped the series before or during Gen 4-5.

Now only if there's a modded version of FRLG where the only changes are the moves have the physical/special split and access to mystery gift.

They turned the entire region into a giant coniferous forest. Wether it's pallet town or saffron city, every single city and route is now surrounded by pinetrees when Kanto is supposed to be particularly urban

It's not much else to say because it's very similar to its original game. The one objective flaw I would say is the limiting of evolutions (like Crobat) outside the original 151 until the NatDex is unlocked

Still, a great game overall.
