Item Spamming does though, which is why I play without items in battle these days.

I had a habit of KOing every wild Pokémon I ran across unless I hadn't caught one of it before (then I'd ofc try to catch it), and battling ALL the trainers, so my team would consistently be a decent bit above the trainers and Gyms.
Hell, one of my worst memories of my first playthrough is me thinking my level 20 or so Hitmonchan (yes, I genuinely went back into Mt. Mortar before going into the League) getting one-tapped by Lance's Gyarados because I for some reason thought the level disparity wouldn't matter that much.
Yeah I still think Lance is a brick wall compared to the rest of the game. He's got more of his bases covered than any other trainer.

Very frustrating part of the game. Even Red only took me 2 tries cuz the game hands you Lugia and Mewtwo at level 70.
