Well, yeah.
Ultimately there's no completely indestructible and eternal way to preserve data and flash storage used by old cartridges is rather fragile and prone to malfunction. Bonus points if you store it completely unprotected in your fucking basement or some other shitty place.

Damage from being improperly stored? If you live in area with high humidity that can do it

That makes me think I may want to check in on my old Ruby file where I had a Pokedex count of 381 (out of then 386, the only ones missing were Ho-Oh, Lugia, Celebi, Deoxys and Jirachi. I got Mew from an event.)

If that thing is gone it will break my heart, even though I completed the entire dex atleast twice since then on 3DS game, since GTS makes it so easy.

Btw, you can get all those mons without cheating (bar Deoxys) with the Gamecube games.
