This moment needs meta context to be kino - Red sucks on its own no matter how much merch and shits TPC push for him nowadays.
Fight against him in GSC tho was pure kino. It was perfect book ending for Tajiri's duology and what can be considered "true" Pokemon. It all started with "Red" standing alone in his room and ended with the same guy alone on top of the world, ready for all-out battle and passing baton of "the strongest Pokemon trainer" to next generation.
There's also a lot in how laconic this entire encounter is - there's no visual frail, no epic speech, no big story narrative leading to that fight. It's eerie moment, almost metaphysical - Is "Red" actually standing there in person or it's just hallucination of player's character? Or maybe a lingering spirit of someone who's not there anymore? Hell, maybe that entire fight actually never happened and is representation only as exact moment of player's character accepting their title of the strongest after their travel not only through Johto, but also retracing road that "Red" also went through.
