in most of the old games you either need to switch train, which have fun switch training 6 magikarps in the early game, or you need to wait until the mid/late game for one area you can use a super rod.

It really doesn’t matter how long you have to wait because a team of five Gyarados plus a Ground type is better than anything you could conceivably build in a Nuzlocke.
Not to mention that once you have one it just becomes easier to get more

Dupes clause exists to force variety, it swings both ways, it stops you from stacking your team with Crobats, Gyrados ect. and also allows at least a somewhat interest experience with each playthrough

I use dupes clause because when I'm playing nuzzlocke I can only have 6 pokemon at a time and none in reserve. Even playing in this way it's very rare for a pokemon to die if the player is careful. My johto nuzzlocke had 4 deaths and most of them are because I got bored with the mindless grinding and stopped paying attention.
So, yeah. I use dupe cause to have some variety on the team.
