They look a lot worse than they are, the combat has been getting more intuitive with each game, try it out. That said, 1 and X are my personal favorites

Pokemon is the biggest entertainment franchise on the planet, there is literally no more profitable media property. There really isn't any excuse for Pokemon being anything other than best in class.

There's a lot happening in battle, but unless you're playing hard mode/superbosses most of it is ignorable. The actual control of the characters is pretty fun and understandable once you learn their moves.
