18 hats on every pokemon is literally bloating the filesize by 18 times. This is also why they removed player customization, so they don't have to store a unique model for every clothes combination and can save space.

19 different maractus taking up space on the SD card is too much.

It should actually be just 1 hat for a few Pokemon.
All they had to do was to put all Pokemon heads into an array, and put all the hats into an array.
Once the code worked for Pikachu and a few special case Pokemon, it should work fine for every other Pokemon.

SWSH gimmick doesn't scale with the amount of mons.

Anon, they don’t make 19 versions of the same Pokemon.
All 18 hats are their own Prefabs and attach themselves to the top of each Pokemon.

To put it roughly, every Lillie you saw in SM was it's own unique model from its own unique file, copypasted on every route and every cutscene she appeared in.

Thats... that's how cutscene work. Sure, there could be a better way to do it, but that's what you do for every cutscene in every game, you have a different file with different cutscene and dialogue parameters.
