I wouldn't mind an elite 4 if they only had some development throughout the story. They need to have a strong personality to make an impression in the limited number of appearances they'll have. I mean the champion already makes plenty of appearances. Why not add the ability to explore some areas with E4 members? I like the Alola E4 because it's mostly characters you're already familiar with and both parties expect the best from each other.
Though sometimes seeing characters I've defeated at the highest pedestal can actually have the opposite effect and make me overconfident because I believe I can defeat them again, I still stand by what I said. Hearing about the Elite 4 without having ever seen them sounds cool if you're a useless NPC in the Pokemon world but it's like writing 101 to make characters of this caliber count in the story.
