I was 9-10 at the peak of pokemon hype in the end of the 90s and the beginning of the 2000s. My parents also forced me into religion heavy as fuck like my whole childhood. At a certain point, sometime after a family friend gave me my gameboy color and pokemon red, they actually had a whole sermon on sunday, about me. And the pokemon being evil of course. I guess i played it alot. But yeah man, church people are nuts.

SMT was unknown in the west and has been pretty niche until fairly recently.

The main fear was behind the fact that pokemon was one of the first major video game franchises successfully aimed at children, whereas beforehand they were more often than not aimed at teenagers or creepy adults. Kinda like if someone tried putting CBD in a kids drink today, it would be mostly harmless and likely beneficial but there would be an uproar from it due the negative connotations of drug use, and not just from christians.
