Gyms: Ice, Grass, Bug, Water, Psychic, Ghost, Normal, Electric

Elite 4: Dragon, Steel, Ground, Flying

Star Admins: Fire, Fighting, Rock, Poison, Fairy

And then we’re unsure on Dark - could be a Star Admin, or another important character.

Why? The flags on the map are dark red, red, violet, very dark blue (almost black) and yellow. So I'd expect them to the Fire, Fighting, Poison, Dark and either Rock or Ground
Fairy would be the only type left

What? This is the most competitively impactful change since Mega evolutions, if that isn't enough for changing battles for you I don't know what more you want them to do to make it different. At the end of the day battles will always just be battles that won't fundamentally change
