Exp Share isn't the issue, but we play these games like EXP is still a rare commodity,
Prior to the introduction of the current EXP Share mechanics in Gen VI, EXP was far more difficult to obtain. If you didn't fight every trainer and grind you would likely to be underlevelled for major battles (with the notable exception of Johto's weird level curve). We were taught, mechanically, to scrape the world and fight *everybody*. Optional trainer battles were a thing but you were taking a major EXP deficit by skipping them.
From XY onwards I feel that a lot of us have retained this mindset (I know I tend to habitually scrape through every encounter on a given route) but exp isn't a rare commodity now. If you see a trainer looking in multiple directions you can afford to try ducking them rather than just battling them anyway.
I'm not saying that the exp curve is perfect in every 3D era game. It's definitely not. But I do think part of the issue is players sticking to the approach they're familiar with despite being given more flexibility. The additional trainers are there as a means to gain exp *if* you need it but we treat them as content to "clear".
I think it'll be interesting to see how people feel about the level of challenge in Scarlet/Violet given the open ended nature of it. I can guarantee you right now, if you go into every area with the goal of clearing every bit of content before completing the gym then you're going to be overlevelled.
Maybe you will all disagree with this but I think it's worth bringing up. I mean, in any other JRPG party exp gain is a standard function and you would expect to be overlevelled if you cleared every bit of content before progressing the story. I think the only reason we don't expect that to be the case with Pokemon is that it didn't use to be the case.
