Well from what I've seen, this isn't a replacement for battling, it's an alternate activity with alternate rewards. It looks like a less soulless version of those mobile gacha games (not saying much at all I know but stick with me) where you send your spare units away for them to do quests on their own, and after a while they come back with some currency, some random items, etc. That's what this looks like.
In other words, Poke Pelago from gen 7 but more hands on.
