Does Alola count with the Totems? I feel like the 2 v 1 set-up, plus the usual instakill of Z moves makes some of them reasonably challenging.

Gen 7 is considered hard because even despite all of that, the enemies are designed well. They have perfect EVs and IVs, incredible movesets with coverage and good AI. Of course it's not impossible to beat at all, it's a toddler game at the end of the day. But relatively speaking, it's hard compared to other pokemon games. Like with Gen 5, I can easily say the gym leaders are stupidly easy because they have very bad teams with horrible movesets and only 3 pokemon and the game is kind enough to provide an exact counter to the gym leader's team in just the route around them. Like getting a fighting type before Lenora, Ground type before Elsa, Ice type before Clay and Electric type before Skyla.

Sinnoh's gyms are piss easy, all of the starters are so overpowered and the combination of Staraptor and Luxray, Pokemon used on almost 100% of DPPT teams, cleans up any gym with their synergy. Staraptor alone is probably the single best ingame Pokemon when factoring in availability, power and the absolute bullshittery known as Close Combat. You can't go "whitney is hard only if you're shit" then unironically list Gardenia.

I'd have to agree with Totem battles being way harder than Gym Leaders on average, I've never been forced on the backfoot like SM did with some of its wacky bullshit such as Totem Lurantis having a Castform to back it up and Vikavolt.
Outside of that I think there's a single digit number of tough fights from gym leaders themselves, maybe Norman? Lenora is a bitch on Nuzlockes since Retaliate+Boosted Accuracy Hypnosis is pretty brutal at that stage of the game.

Yes anon, and I'm saying it doesn't matter. You could have everything in the game be trainers full of level 100 broken legendaries but if you had an infinite PP priority always accurate OHKO move it would be piss easy. That's not even really an exaggerated example due to how absurd the Amie buffs get.
Any mention of Gen 7 being 'hard' is literally just people gimping themselves.

I can only think of so many other Pokemon games that hand you super effective nukes the next boss is weak to and the bosses only have one Pokemon for the most part so using it finishes the battle in one turn and the main bosses are dogfuck easy and there's broken Amie buffs that let you dodge and survive and heal and land crits and do a bunch of bullshit while also literally handing you multiple broken Pokemon on top of legendary-strength Pokemon and give you extremely high encounter diversity to the point where you can construct an entire box of counters against every gym in the game and it has a broken Exp curve so you're massively stronger than everything you fight at all times and then you combine everything stupidly broken about Pokemon's gameplay to begin with.
Maybe don't call a game for literal toddlers hard in any way shape or form and you might be taken seriously. Every game in this franchise is a 0/10 in terms of difficulty and SM is even easy by that level of difficulty.

I think Hoenn had the most notably difficult ones. I’ve heard at least a few people say they’ve had trouble with nearly all of them, with Wattson, Norman, Winona and Tate/Liza (In emerald) being the stand outs. Other than that, most regions have like one or 2 toughies at most, kanto has Sabrina, johto has Whitney and Clair, Sinnoh has like, maybe Fantina? Unova has Lenora and Elesa (Maybe Clay depending on your starter choice?). The rest are lol

Tldr definitely Hoenn, especially in emerald. The better question is what makes Hoenn leaders more difficult? You wouldn’t see much of a difference looking at their teams on bulbapedo.

Actually on second thought I think the difference is how readily the games hands you the necessary counters to beat them. Most gym leaders in other games have a handful of Pokémon that will counter them, with the player likely to have at least 1, even Whitney has a few (Geodude, Onix, Ghastly). By comparison, Wattson is only truly countered by geodude, there’s virtually no water types before Flannery and Torkoal can potentially fuck on anything else even at a type disadvantage cause of its stupid high defence, Normans only hard counters are mons that learn protect/detect via level up which aren’t that common and it’s just generally less obvious than a type match up, and Winona’s team is diverse enough that no one type can sweep her whole team, in particular you need a good rock/ice type attacker for her Altaria, neither of which are remotely common (Literally no ice types by then so no stab bonus on ice beam, and this was back when rock types had no good offensive moves outside the stingily distributed rock slide)
I’m beginning to realize the players toolset makes just as much if not more of a difference than the gym leaders.

I just fought every trainer and kept the Exp Share on. What level even was it, 60? I was easily around 63-65 and I think my stronger Pokemon might have been higher.
