While side material didn't really do anything, Toxitricity is clearly meant to be the "cool" shillmon alongside the "starter final" Cinderace.
Gen 6 had edgier luke(or one of the megas atleast, not really sure looking back at it) alongside Greninja, kinda hard to pin down what gen 6 wanted out of itself really.
Similarly gen 7 had the dog alongside baracat.
