Gen 1 single-handedly pushed the gameboy link cable into existence, Gen 1 and 2 did the same for the N64 transfer pak as well as the real-time clock on GSC. HGSS putting an IR transmitter on the cart and bundling a gamefied pedometer with every copy was a very fitting callback to that era. Just pure soul.
