Gila lizard is good only because it doesn't become a bipedal furry design. Builder beaver is boring. Nothing is unique about it; it's just construction workers that happen to be beavers. Raccoon thief is a tired trope as well, and that's all it has going for it. They all suffer from the same problem; "it just gets bigger". Nothing else aside from Digimon could really compete, and even if other series like M-Hunter or Shin Megami Tensei are of higher game quality, the audience/market isn't the same.

Pokemon is the one franchise you can't copy because everyone will see it from a mile away. This is why the first almost Pokemon killer in years was Yokai Watch because Yokai Watch is a "monster catcher" type game but it and Pokemon are far removed from each other which is ultimately why it got popular on its own. It was something unique and something interesting. Buddymon and TemTem just bring the same shit we already have at the table.

The only franchises that make sense to have clones are sim games like Animal Crossing (I don't know how the clones keep fucking it up though) and Harvest Moon.

Yes and no, if you don't treat it as a Harvest Moon game but it's own thing it's enjoyable. I like talking to the animal villagers, having old ones move out and new ones move in, slowly changing the town in NL and NH, and decorating my house while paying off the loan and collecting bugs/fish/fossils for the Museum. New Horizon sucks though because most of the best parts of previous games were locked behind a drip feed wall before they dropped everything in at once after a little while. I much preferred everything being unlocked slowly in the base game like New Leaf had.

With pokemon in it's current state they could win if bandai would stop kneecapping the series with zero budget. The TCG is great the anime is pretty good, there's already plenty of merchandise, they just need to get the games up to speed. It's place in the cultural zeitgeist will do the rest, and it will become "the better pokemon".

You're not totally wrong, but there's a reason why Digimon and Megaten have had staying power while Indieshit Pokemon #5327984 gets forgotten within five minutes of its release, and it's because they provide fundamentally different experiences that you'll never get from Pokemon.
