VC sales ere minimal (RGBY only sold 1.5m), they didn't even put the best handheld Zelda game on VC (I got minish cap as an Ambassador alright, but no-one bought a 3DS till the price drop either so they didn't get it) and of the two highest-selling handhelds they've ever made, the selection of games was decidedly normie bullshit, gimped ports of NES titles or crappy tie-in games, with Pokémon updating itself for the modern as time goes on.
The Switch is popular - the highest-selling home console unit they've ever made and only 45m off its highest-selling games unit ever. And due to that, they're targeting a lot more people than just their baseline fanboys, because that makes more sense than the alternative of pandering to a niche of the overall.
