In the anime, Cynthia was always built up as strong(more so than the games), while Iris was a complete joke compared to her game self(who was a rare prodigy of the highest caliber).
It was more than a little awkward how they suddenly turned Iris more game accurate, and her winning this match would honestly feel a bit out of place with the anime portrayal.
