There was totally a swap, Gamefreak just magically swapped around the internal order to facilitate it.
Its not like Venomoth actually looks like Caterpie either besides "they have crests", it looks like neither mon in actuality; its a pretty big reach to act like it belongs with Caterpie either.
And while people love to act like Butterfree keeps all aspects it really doesn't; where did the fluff go? It doesn't really make sense as an evolution of the Venonat design either(and yes, Venonat came first by far).
