Why is it okay for Ash's Pikachu to be stronger than an ordinary Pikachu, but wrong for a Meowth to be exceptionally strong?

Just like every region prior to Alola aside from the Filler Islands and Johto, as we don't know Johto's champion (as a result of it being separate from Kanto in the anime)?

Lets Go Pikachu and Lets Go Meowth would have made so much more sense. Both were 2 stage evos(in gen1), separated from the starter types, had history as mascots and from the show. I dont know why they picked Evee as the other counterpart besides being your rivals pick in Yellow. Its down on all 4 legs all the time, its evolutions options dont really feel like a good comparison to Pikas single evo. I get the popularity, but just feels like a weird alt version pick to Pikachu.

Because Eevee is very popular, wasn't version exclusive like meowth, it's cute unlike the meowth which looks like a Nekoarc reject and his evolutions are very easy to get, you can literally grab it and evolve on the spot, even being almost always a gift made it very easy to get unlike say meowth which sometimes was a version exclusive, the anime making it a Villain surely didn't help it.

But thats the thing, the whole schtick with evee makes it completely different from fairly mudane pikachu. Like they are not really equal comparisons. At that point should have just made evee either hour starter so it can mimic the 3 normal starter types and get pikachu early on or vice versa. But of course that would require just 1 version of the game to sell with a full dex so a big no no..

Jigglypuff would have been a better pick considering its 2 stage, was a old, old mascot in the primal days of the franchise and its history alongside pika in smash bros.

More like one of the higher ups favorite Pokémon is Psyduck and since this game is basically a reference to the anime and how prevalent it was in the original series it makes sense.

A superpowered Meowth sounds kind of cool, I like non-traditional/unevolved Aces but they were going for another fucking "WOAH HE'S JUST LIKE ME" rival giving it Iron Tail and Thunderbolt, which became really egregious when Pikachu's Thunderbolt was shown to be less effective
Harrison and even Tobias were just strong trainers who had a different team / style to Ash and that was more entertaining
