You can potentially leave Erika Sabrina or Blake as you second to last gym before Giovanni. None of them would be stronger but you can do it.

Can you? Under normal gameplay, you can't skip Brock as the first Gym Leader, you have to do Misty to be allowed to use Cut to access Celadon (And therefore Erika).
Celadon access is needed for both Sabrina (Needed for the Guards to access Saffron) and Koga (Need to clear Pokemon Tower for Flute, and you need Silph Scope from the Rocket Hideout for that)
You need to beat Koga to use Surf, so Blaine is out until then.
You need all 7 Badges for Giovanni.
Obviously there are unintended ways to break these requirements, but at that point, you don't need to do any of the Gyms, so.
I'm not saying Kanto is as linear as other Gens, because obviously it isn't, but you sure as hell can't just do whatever you please.

Not really unintended. After Misty it's 100% intentional that you can do Surge/Erika/Koga/Sabrina in any order.

Playing the Gyms in any order other than Brock>Misty>Surge>Erika>Koga etc. is not normal gameplay.

Also, I can use just my Gameboy and the game itself with no external help to get past Brock/any Gym leader, so I can do the leaders in any order I want except for Giovanni. /thread

Absolutely, but this is why I'm sticking to normal gameplay. How iconic something is doesn't make it normal.
You can get to Saffron early by trading the item from the Guards to the game via Stadium.
You can just walk to Cinnabar with another glitch etc.

Swap Koga and Sabrina. That way, subsequent gyms have some typing advantage against the previous one (Rock weak to Water weak to Electric ineffective against Grass weak to Poison etc). Psychic to Fire only works because of Sabrina's Venomoth.

I always did Koga before Sabrina. I didn't know you could do it the other way. It just doesn't feel right either. In Gen 2, I did Pryce before Chuck the first time round. It's weird. I seem to instinctually go the hard route in most games I play.

This is where it always changes for me, especially in HGSS where they're closer in level. Typically I do Chuck, Pryce, Jasmine, but sometimes I'll do Pryce first and VERY occasionally I'll do Pryce last. I always do Chuck before Jasmine tho.

I think the only gyms the game really assumes you might do out of order is Koga and Sabrina. I did them backwards the first time I played because I couldn't read and therefor couldn't get into saffron.
I think technically you only have to do brock and misty first and then Koga before Blaine and I forget if Geovanni is triggered by beating Blaine or having 7 badges. But I think you need to physically enter vermillion and celadon to advance the game, hence most people only really ever switching Koga and Sabrina, who both have level 43 aces.

I might be remembering wrong but here goes. I do this every time based on "final boss" levels
>Rocket Hideout then Erika
>Snorlax then CycleRoad, Safari then Koga
>Fly to Saffron, take on Dojo
>Do routes from Lavender to Fuchsia, get other Snorlax
>Fly to Saffron, clear Silph Co, then Sabrina
Blaine is then next.

I do similar with Johto but it's a little less complex, just involves travelling to Mahogany but not doing Pryce till 7th.

No, gen 1 just didn't consider the gyms to be the main railroad. Outside of Saffron, you have to visit the towns in a specific order in order to progress. People make too big of a deal out of the fact that the game let you walk out of the town afterward without doing the gym.

This is what I did for years until recently.
I always thought you had to beat Koga for the rocket guarding silph co to move. Turns out that's not the case.

You can do them really out of order, but in a normal playthrough you would likely only do sabrina and koga in a random order
The only rules are
>Brock must be first
>Giovanni must be last
>Misty must be before Erika and Surge
>Koga must be before Blaine
so in practice, most people will just do Erika and Koga whenever, but in theory you could do like Brock, Koga, Blaine, Sabrina, Misty, Surge, Erika, Giovanni

Exactly.
Gen V shook things up a little again, which I liked. It's just so bizarre to me though how, barring an exception here or there, each game seems to take even fewer risks than the last. Most long-running game series, especially JRPGs, always seem to try and top the previous entry with each installment, but fucking Pokemon does shit like having the starters in gen 2 be monotype and having the champion in gen 2 literally just be the penultimate boss in the prior game.
At least Red was cool.

Honestly, I always considered Red the final boss of GSC, you even see the credits after beating him. Pretty sure many people think like this too.
Outside gen 1 this was the only moment that felt like a surprise.

Misty is a level spike and it's still pretty early in the game.

Koga, you can just defeat him with one pokémon and 2 moves. Poison is a joke type anyway.

It was great to see Ghetsis as the final boss of gen V. Lance, while he is the 'fake final boss' of gen1, got a great role in Johto, even using his own Pokémon to beat the evil team.
Steven and Cynthia were just 'the Lance of their region', but they didn't have a great moment similar to Dragonite attacking a grunt.
