Shitposting aside, Cynthia is actually really boring. In both design and personality (rather, lack there of). I'm convinced only NPCs with no real thoughts of their own like her, simply based off of her merits alone.

Yeah, most of her popularity is just based on her being the first female Champion and having a good team. As far as her actual character goes she's pretty boring in the games, she's essentially just a female Steven based on her interactions with you, with the one notable advantage being that she goes with you to the Distortion World. Otherwise she really doesn't do anything all game, I still like Blue and Lance way better. I wonder if she'd be nearly as popular if she didn't get a metric ton of porn with Dawn.

Cynthia's character is better. You criticize Cynthia for giving exposition but Steven doesn't even have that. Steven spends the whole game giving the generic champion dialogue. Cynthia's knowledge on Sinnoh's lore is more relevant to the plot and even if it's short her interaction with Cyrus in Platinum was a lot better than Steven's interactions with his villains, which is practically none.

Why are you being obtuse? Obviously she does things in the game, she just doesn't do anything of note. Don't be so literal. Like, she doesn't join you for a battle, or hold off some grunts, or fight a Galactic Commander or anything like that. As opposed to someone like Lance who raids a Team Rocket hideout with you, it's just kind of boring. It falls into the same trap as Gen 3 where a hyper-competent adult is on the scene during a catastrophic event but for whatever reason refuses to help and leaves it to the literal child nearby. It's a marginal improvement over Gen 3 where Steven literally sends you into the Cave of Origin to die but it's really not that much better.

It's definitely an improvement but since it's still a step down from the player's interactions with Lance it doesn't really stand out. She talks about the lore and gives you some medicine for some Psyducks. That's it. The standards for Champions should be higher, there's really no reason Cynthia should be as popular as she is.

I really like that part of the Johto games. I just don't automatically think Cynthia is bad just because she doesn't fight some jobber grunt in the story. The protagonist is not just a child they're a super skilled battling prodigy. I don't see why it's such a big deal that some champions are cool with letting you fight the bad guys, besides Cynthia is there with you as backup anyway. Being upset with a character's popularity is silly as well. Of course the writing in pokemon games can improve but as it is there's nothing so terribly wrong with Cynthia. In fact, if the way to "fix" Cynthia is having her battle a grunt or two then the character isn't really that bad in the first place.

As mentioned before the only reason she is remembered is that Gen 4 was a lot of peoples first pokemon game and she was the champion of that game. You guys are acting as if every other champion has a complex character. Cynthia may be a bit bland, but every champion is a bit bland because they never get a lot of character development. Also, Cynthia's short appearance in the BW anime already has way more characterization than pretty much any champion other than maybe Leon.

I'll never understand the vocal minority Cynthia hate. She doesn't play a big role in the story, but neither do most other champions. She is popular because she has a classy design, was the first female champion, has a memorable battle theme, has a well rounded and strong team and whatever bits of character she has in the games is likable. Isn’t that what the champion should do though? Imagine how lame it would be if the champions fought the villains instead of the player. Here’s all this build-up to the climax of the plot, now instead of YOU beating the bad guy, it’s the champion because they need to be relevant to muh story?? Champions don’t need to be complex characters. Them being champion is their character, just like gym leaders being gym leaders is their character (plus whatever job they do on like gardening/modeling/flying planes, but even then most champions also have a side gig too). I just never understood this demand for champions to be main characters when that’s the whole purpose of the player character.

The biggest bullshit cope I've heard in several month not coming from a politician's mouth. If you go to /padt/ or other champion threads, you can see how they would defend their champions to the death as much as how cynthiatards do. From outsider's standpoint, the loudest minority would be Alain's fans. Cynthia's are loud simply because the sheer size of her fanbase and if you have no clue how big it is, then you are just a newfag or a tourist from any board other than /vp/ or /v/. The biggest fanbases I know of are Ash's, Leon's, Cynthia's, and Steven's. Everyone else are minority groups. Lurk moar fag

Nah, I think there's a pretty good middleground here. Lance in Gen 2 is the perfect example, his actual role in the story is extremely brief but extremely memorable, and the game provides perfect escalation of the action by having you work together with Lance to clear the Mahogany Town hideout and then having the player solo the Radio Tower. There doesn't necessarily have to be more to a RPG character than their role, especially the Champion who is essentially just a final boss of sorts, but it greatly helps with worldbuilding and immersion for the role of Champion to actually mean something. The games themselves reinforce by having the MC's struggle against the villains be part of their ascension to Champion. It's not unreasonable to say that without the challenge posed by the villains the MC wouldn't be experienced enough to reliably challenge the Pokemon League. So without even trying the game makes it feel as if being brave and defeating bad guys is part of what makes a trainer a Champion. There's something that rings a bit hollow about Cynthia's love of muh lore when she doesn't even bother intervening to protect the Lake Pokemon, the capture of which seems to be way more important to Professor Rowan than Cynthia. People love to shit on Leon but there's a pretty cool moment in SwSh where Dynamax'd Pokemon are running rampant and Leon ends up beating them off-screen. I remember quite a few people reacting negatively to this but I liked it quite a bit, it was the kind of thing a Champion would and should do. It isn't the duty of children who are just trying to complete their League challenge to put themselves in harm's way, especially when there are more competent adults nearby. It's not unreasonable to expect a Champion to help out, or at the very least justify why they aren't helping. Having faith in the MC or wanting to leave it to the next generation or whatever only goes so far, and doesn't really work in a doomsday scenario like in RSE/DPPt.

Leon was too good for SwSh. IF the player was actually given something to do that actually mattered, than Leon fighting off Dynamx Pokemon work so much better. Instead it just comes across as Game Freak being too lazy to let let the player do anything so they just shoved all the major stuff into the background and made Leon play the game for you.

I used to be one of those people who always complained about how Champions were useless and let the task of saving the region to a 10 years old kid while they're dicking around with their hobby. The worst part is that this issue is easily solved by Leon telling you "Okay MC-kun come with me let's do this shit together because I know how strong you are" and presto. Now you have best of both worlds. Except small indie studio please understand and GF is too incompetent to actually recreate all the things they keep saying Leon is solving off-screen and what-not.
What do I even get out of this as a player? Absolutely nothing. Just another way for the game to tell me that Leon-sama is da bes and I should be sucking his cock. How exciting like if the 10 previous times weren't enough already.
